Pattern syntax
Every character in the pattern means one of these things.
- ? (or _ or .) is exactly one letter. "c?t" matches cat, cit, cot and cut.
- * is any number of letters, including none. "*ough" matches rough, through and thorough.
- [aeiou] is one letter from the set. "c[ao]t" matches cat and cot.
- [^aeiou] is one letter that is not in the set. "c[^a]t" matches cit, cot and cut.
- Any other letter matches itself.
Crosswords
For a crossword answer, type the letters you have and ? for the gaps: "?a?e?" for a five-letter word with a at two and e at four. Use Must include letters when a clue tells you a letter is somewhere in the word.
Limits
A pattern can fix up to 15 letters and every word in the list has 2 to 15 letters. A lone * returns the whole list, which is long.
